Jo/Bo/Hanbo Stick Training

Holding A Hanbo Stick

This week we were introduced to stick fighting techniques at Budo Ryu, we were asked to bring in broom handles as they are a similar size (4ft) to a “JO” which is the proper name for a fighting stick, there’s also something called a BO (6ft) and I’ve accidentally discovered a “HANBO” (3ft).

There’s some things in life (not many in my case) that you just take to like a duck in water and are good at from the start, now stick fighting is one of those things that I just picked up really quickly and was very good at from the start, if only other things in karate were so simple (to me anyway).

Well as I enjoyed it so much and was good at it I decided to invest in a proper weapon to get even better (no I won’t be practising on my children in case you were worried) and I jumped straight onto Google as you do and searched out an online shop that sells them.

After a bit of refining and jumping into the shopping channel in Google I discovered Playwell Martial Arts (there’s a free link guys) who were offering sticks, I ordered what I thought was a “JO” but it was actually a “HANBO” I stupidly thought it was the same thing just called something else, actually I discovered when it arrived it was a foot shorter than a “JO”, but that’s no big deal I can do pretty much the same skills with it so it’s all good … let the practise begin!!

If you’re looking for martial arts stuff I’d highly recommend Playwell Martial Arts, the delivery was lightening fast and pricing was not too bad, slightly more expensive than other online traders but not by a lot.

Cinderella Adaption – Christmas Play 2012

Kyler's Christmas Play

Well it was the last Christmas school play of the year I will be attending as the other kids are either too old or too young, it gets busier and busier at these things each year I swear, still it was a cracking play.

So this year Millfield’s older kids put on a wonderful adaption of Cinderella with a touch of moderness (Is that a word?) to it, including songs like Black Eyed Peas “It’s Gonna Be A Good Night” in relation to heading to the ball at night (assuming you know the Cinderella story).

Our very own Kyler was playing fairy dust in the play which had him holding a massive sign that you could hardly miss that said “Fairy Dust” and dancing with feather dusters and doing a number of songs, bless his heart he gave it his all which was nice to see, hoping as he moves up to year 3 next year he may get a more lead role as he’s certainly very energetic and a great singer to go with it … just like his sister Jaycee as a matter of fact!

Well done Millfield for another great Christmas show, looking forward to what you are gong to dream up for next year, keep up the good work :)

Lose Weight By Being Stubborn

Weighing Scales

There’s no secret I’ve battled with my weight since my mid 20′s, the problem probably stemmed back to my childhood and school life, I was always a lanky desperately skinny child who got bullied quite badly, you know who you all were … shame on you!

As soon as I moved out of secondary school to sixth form I went to a sixth form that was away from the norm and nobody from my secondary school (Melbourn Village College) went to the same sixth form as me (Meridian in Royston), actually this was the best thing that ever happened to me, nobody knew me so it was a fresh start, I bought myself some “cool” clothes, got my haircut by a barber (rather than letting my Mum do it) and suddenly I was the new boy on the block and people wanted to know me … and so my confidence in myself began to grow, bear with me I am going to get to the point just wanted to lay down the foundations of why and where I got to where I have now!

So as I was becoming more confident in myself I began to tell myself I never wanted to be subject to the bullying again and in order to achieve that goal I needed to grow strong and put some meat on myself and so the training began!

I dabbled with weights in a shitty gym at the begining, not really with any direction, knowledge or the understanding I have these days, but also kind of knew that to get big you just have to eat loads, yes that’s right to grow you need to eat more calories than you use to sustain your body’s energy needs, the concept is actually quite simple really, the old saying calories in calories out rings very true (In reducing and growing a body).

Anyway to cut a really long laborious story short, I ate and ate and ate and ate some more (don’t get me wrong I was training pretty damned hard to go with it) … hmm maybe a little too much, I didn’t really notice it but over time I got big and reasonably strong and muscular but with a good layer of fat and I was in new territory for me, and so the battle began.

Since that time it’s been a real roller coaster ride of up and down in weight whilst getting stronger and stronger, the routine normally goes, realise I am fat (again) then work my arse off and get back in shape the relax a little, relax a lot more then back to square one grrr!!

SO you want to lose some weight, or should I say fat, how do you do it I here you ask … especially as you get older and your metabolism naturally slows down … my answer is by being stubborn, bear with me…

All too often people stop eating, go fo a little jog once in a while, and half heartedly go about things, nothing happens, then blame their genes, say they don’t have time, get fed up and how many other excuses I’ve heard.

Actually losing fat is a battle of the wits against your body that is going to do everything it can to retain it’s hard earned energy storage (fat), it’s a competition and we all like to win don’t we, so rather than looking at the scales every day to see they haven’t moved or they read more then giving up, you have to get stubborn about it and say to yourself “I’m not having that” and keep trying and learning about the ways you trick your body to get rid of its stores, your weight will plateau and not move for weeks, you will yo-yo in weight up and down, you will feel like giving up … just don’t, be a WINNER and keep fighting and learning … and eventually you will start dropping that fat weight again.

Set yourself a realistic target, I mean realistic, you can safely lose 3 pounds a week but it’s not realistic to say you will lose 3 pounds a week EVERY week, so don’t say I want to lose 12 pounds and that’s 4 weeks (3 pounds x 4 = 12), it’s likely your body (metabolism) will fight you on week 2/3 and you won’t move for 2/3 weeks or even go back up in weight but don’t despair that’s ok … remember losing stubborn fat is about being more STUBBORN than your body!!

I will probably write more blogs on this subject as I learn and adapt my fat burning techniques both in nutrition and training so keep watching for more.

Man That Sh*t Hurts!

wrist-x-ray

Another night in the dojo complete but feeling the pain that’s for sure!

When I got knocked off my R1 down Baker Street a few years back now I managed to break my wrist again (having broken it in another motorbike accident when I was 14) and it’s definitely not been the same since.

Needless to say Budo Ryu involves lots of throwing, punching, kicking and of course wrist locks … see where I’m going with this yet?

Because I’m a big lad they like to stick me sparring with the black belts, which is all very well but come on guys I am still learning give me a break … no actually don’t give me a break … you know what I mean!!

So the old wristage is pretty sore this evening after lots of knife play, wrist locks and the such, just got home and Paula is up in bed with Daizee-Mai so I guess I will retire up there now!

Up early tomorrow to the gym which I’m only going to manage once thanks to family issues and Christmas parties (Can’t complain about that one … toodle loo!

Millfield’s Nursery Christmas School Play 2012

Jaycee School Play

“Tis the season to be jolly” and all that, it’s that time of year, which seems to have come from nowhere if I’m honest, it wasn’t long ago that it was summer and light till late…

Well after a long roller coaster ride of a year with some huge ups and just as huge downs to go with it, now is the time to smile and rejoice as the 2012 Christmas school plays begin.

So the first one was this morning and it was was the turn of Millfield’s reception, nursery and little stars to put on a play where our Jaycee was playing instruments and singing to her hearts content bless her, she does like to sing at every opportunity!!

Last year she was just sat on the floor singing and acting to songs they had learnt in Little Stars, this year was the first proper play she has been part of and was lovely to see, I was such a proud Daddy, I can’t believe she’s grown so much and so big, they weren’t wrong when they said they grow up quickly, you just don’t realise before you get older!!

Next play is Kyler’s which is again at Millfield so looking forward to seeing how that goes, he’s apparently being “Fairy Dust” whatever that means!!

Back To Karate Basics With Budo Ryu

Budo Ryu Buntingford

I’ve done many variations of martial arts over the years including Judo when I was a kid, Shotokwan, Kick Boxing and MMA but due to age, time, work, family all the other excuses I can think of to use I gave up for a good 10 years … until now!

SO I’ve been mulling over the thought of taking up some form of martial arts again and maybe getting Kyler into it too so I did a whole load of research to see what was around locally to me especially as I work form home 3 days a week it makes it easier on the timing thing.

Because Kyler is 6 it’s been quite difficult to find a place that caters not just for me but for him as well, so hard I just gave up and decided to start at Buntingford Budo Ryu Karate club which takes members from ages 10+

So far I have been 4 or 5 weeks (can’t quite remember) and I am loving it, it’s good to start from fresh and learn again, Budo Ryu is just phenomenal, really technical rather than power like other forms of karate I’ve done.

I am a white belt but I don’t think it will be long till I take my first grading, I’ve already learnt the first Kata so won’t be long before I move up to red belt, just need to get the form and technique right, I’m a lot bigger and older since I did this stuff last!

My first bruises from Karate in the event you thought it was a soft sport (I don’t bruise easily at all!)

Bruises On My Arm From Karate

Bruises On My Arm From Karate

Hello World!

Rick & Rob

Well this is the default post that you get when you setup WordPress for the first time so I thought what the hell, I’ll leave it in and personalise it a bit, lazy? … I guess so!

So this is my site … welcome, why do I have a site? lets’s investigate …

It’s called a “blog” which is actually short for “web log” …. weblog doesn’t sound so cool so let’s drop the “we” add the two words together and hey presto we are back to where we started “blog” … what does that mean … well it’s a log that’s on the web so this site is really a log of my life, thoughts and what I do … it would have been cool to have had one of these from day dot but sadly the functionality didn’t exist back then.

But it does now which is why I have also setup individual blogs for the rest of the family, Paula Duncan (The Wife), Kyler Duncan (My Son), Jaycee Duncan (My Daughter), Daizee-Mai Duncan (My Daughter) and Jaydan Dansie (My Step Daughter) and least the kids will have something they can look back on when they get to my age!

Anyway no point telling you who I am and what I do here as I have handily already done that on the “about me” page just follow the link and have a read if you’re THAT interested :o )
